It was clear that the homeowners did not want a typical Hampton landscape. They sought inspiration from the rough-hewn landscaping on the Highline in New York City. It’s an extremely modern home, but they wanted the plantings to look rustic and wild, balancing the architecture. Their topography was a challenge as the house is one block from ocean, and on a hill, so they needed salt-tolerant plant materials and rolling hills. We came up with a plan to cradle the house with twenty-five types of ornamental grasses, sedums, Echinacea flowers, Buddleia (butterfly bushes), Yarrow, Rosa Rugosa, and more. I designed, tiered and sculpted the fields and pockets of wild grasses and flowerings to create a purposefully, un-manicured naturalism.
